A DEBT SELECTION MODEL FOR BANKS OF THE COOPERATIVE FARM CREDIT SYSTEM AgEcon
Tauer, Loren W.; Boehlje, Michael.
This article discusses the application of a quadratic programming model to the bond and note participation decision of a Cooperative Farm Credit Bank. The model generates an efficient frontier of bond and note portfolios from which a bank can choose. The composition of these portfolios depends upon the expected cost and variance-covariance of cost for the bond and note activities, debt needs, and the debt policy constraints of a bank. The results indicate that the interest rate risk of various bond and note issues should be considered when making debt participation decisions.

Age and Farmer Productivity AgEcon
Tauer, Loren W..
Farmer productivity by age was estimated, allowing for differences because of efficiency and returns to scale. Using Census of Agriculture data, estimates vary by state, but returns to scale average 1.07. Efficiency increases average 4.5 percent every ten years of age, to the age interval 35 to 44, and then decreases at that same rate.

AGRICULTURAL DIVERSITY AND CASH RECEIPT VARIABILITY FOR INDIVIDUAL STATES AgEcon
Tauer, Loren W.; Seleka, Tebogo B..
Changes in individual states' agricultural production diversity and variance of cash receipts were measured over the 30-year period 1960 through 1989. Diversity was measured using a general index, of which the inverse Herfindahl and the Entropy are special cases. Cash receipt variability was measured using a heteroscedasticity correction process. Although 38 states experienced an increase in cash receipt variability, only 14 states also experienced a decrease in diversification. Thus, it appears that an increase in cash receipt variability was not due to reduction in diversification for most states.

Altering Milk Components Produced by the Dairy Cow: Estimation by a Multiple Output Distance Function AgEcon
Cho, Jaesung; Nakane, Matsato; Tauer, Loren W..
The impact of inputs on the four decomposed milk outputs of fluid milk, butterfat, protein, and other solids were estimated using an output distance function, with New York dairy farm level data. Differential impacts of inputs on component production indicate that milk component composition can be modified given component prices.

Detecting Technological Heterogeneity in New York Dairy Farms AgEcon
del Corral, Julio; Alvarez, Antonio; Tauer, Loren W..
Agricultural studies have often differentiated and estimated different technologies within a sample of farms. The common approach is to use observable farm characteristics to split the sample into several groups and subsequently estimate different functions for each group. Alternatively, unique technologies can be determined by econometric procedures such as latent class models. This paper compares the results of a latent class model with the use of a priori information to split the sample using dairy farm data in the application. Latent class separation appears to be a superior method of separating heterogeneous technologies.

DETERMINING THE OPTIMAL AMOUNT OF NITROGEN TO APPLY TO CORN USING THE BOX-COX FUNCTIONAL FORM AgEcon
Tauer, Loren W..
A Box-Cox functional form was estimated from corn-nitrogen data previously used to report optimal nitrogen use from a quadratic production function. Results suggest that less nitrogen should be app1ie.d than recommended using the quadratic function, but with more nitrogen being applied if poor growing conditions are expected.

Do New York Dairy Farmers Maximize Profits? AgEcon
Tauer, Loren W..
Varian's Weak Axiom of Profit Maximization was used to determine whether each of 49 New York dairy farms displayed behavior consistent with profit maximization. The results indicate that most were only moderately successful in maximizing profits. Characteristics of the farms did not strongly differentiate those that were better at maximizing profits.

Economic Analysis of Johne's Disease Control Strategies in Dairy Herds AgEcon
Cho, Jaesung; Tauer, Loren W.; Schukken, Ynte H.; Smith, Rebecca L.; Lu, Zhao; Grohn, Yrjo T..
Infectious diseases play a critical role in determining the profitability of individual farms and maintaining the viability of livestock industries, international trade, and trade policies. Thus, it is critical to analyze the economic consequences of infectious diseases, and the effects of producer strategies to control or eliminate diseases in a cost efficient approach. Also, important is the goal to rally support for the development of public disease control programs. This study examined the long-term feasibility and effectiveness of various producer strategies to prevent and control Johne’s disease in dairy herds, an infectious and incurable disease which has significant economic repercussions for the dairy industry. There are few previous studies...

Empirical Analysis of Stanchion and Parlor Milking Cost on New York Dairy Farms AgEcon
Katsumata, Kentaro; Tauer, Loren W..
This paper empirically estimates cost functions for two milking technologies, stanchion and parlor, using farm level data from New York dairy farms for the years 1993 through 2002. A translog cost function was estimated along with input cost share equations for each milking technology by Iterative Seemingly Unrelated Regression. Any pair of inputs among feed, hired Labor, and cows had some degree of substitutability except for a pair of feed and hired labor evaluated by the Allen elasticity, and that of hired labor and feed evaluated by the Morishima elasticity. Additionally, economies of scale were found to exist over the entire range of output levels of the samples. The cost of stanchion technology was lower than that of parlor technology over the sample...

ESTIMATES OF INDIVIDUAL DAIRY FARM SUPPLY ELASTICITIES AgEcon
Tauer, Loren W..
Milk supply elasticities were estimated for 70 farms who participated in the New York Dairy Farm Business Summary Program from 1985 through 1993. Technology was modeled as a single output, single composite input Cobb-Douglas function. The resultant supply function is the natural log of milk quantity as a function of the log of milk price to prices paid for all inputs, with a time trend added. Since random output shocks to each farm may have occurred in any of the nine data years, a dummy year variable was modeled sequentially for each year for each farm. Ignoring 12 negative estimates, elasticities averaged .65. Pooling the data with a fixed effects model produced an elasticity estimate of .47. A geometric lag pooled model produced a short-run elasticity...

ESTIMATING INDIVIDUAL FARM SUPPLY AND DEMAND ELASTICITIES USING NONPARAMETRIC PRODUCTION ANALYSIS AgEcon
Stefanides, Zdenko; Tauer, Loren W..
Nonparametric production methods are used to estimate individual supply response and input demand elasticities for a group of New York dairy farm businesses. The ranges of estimates from the upper and lower bounds are extremely large, probably because only nine observations (years) are available for each farm.

Estimation of Treatment Effects of recombinant Bovine Somatotropin using Matching Samples AgEcon
Tauer, Loren W..
The production and profit impacts of recombinant Bovine Somatotropin (rbST) on select New York dairy farms were estimated using data over the years 1994 through 2004, by comparing matching farms which use and do not use rbST. The use of rbST increases milk production per cow and decreases the cost of production per hundredweight of milk. The cost penalty (cost reduction) is $0.39 per hundredweight for those currently using rbST to stop using rbST, while the average treatment effect is $0.73.

Ethanol Plant Investment using Net Present Value and Real Options Analyses AgEcon
Schmit, Todd M.; Luo, Jianchuan; Tauer, Loren W..
A real option analysis of dry-grind corn ethanol plants compared to a standard net present value analysis (NPV) shows that the option values increase entry prices and lower exit prices of investment and disinvestment considerably. For a large plant, the gross margin of ethanol price over the corn price for a gallon of ethanol using NPV shows that entry will occur with a $0.45 margin and shutdown will occur at a $0.38. Under a real options framework, the margins for entry and exit become $1.33 and $0.13, respectively. Under baseline conditions, a large operating plant would become mothballed at $0.18 and reactivate if margins rebounded to $0.66. Growth in the variability of ethanol margins will delay new plant investments, as well as exits of currently...
